Partner, Head of EMEA IR
Our culture is very collaborative, yet we still manage to be nimble.
What drew you to SoftBank Investment Advisers?
Ultimately we’re all entrepreneurs, starting right at the top. This notion is core to our DNA and manifests across everything we do at SBIA. Our culture is very collaborative, yet we still manage to be nimble. These qualities allow us to see and respond to opportunities that may be difficult—or even impossible—for other investors to pursue.
How would you describe your work with limited partners?
They are our partners in a very real sense, and we are their partners in turn. It goes far beyond a traditional allocator-manager relationship. Of course our limited partners expect us to deliver extraordinary investment returns, but our spirit of partnership demands much more than that. We work alongside our major LPs to assist in realizing their regional strategic initiatives in ways both big and small. It's easy to talk a good game about partnership, but what we have built with our limited partners is much more than mere lip service.
What qualities unite the people you work with?
The first thing that jumps into my mind is diligence and dedication. When someone has a big idea that has real merit, no one says, That's crazy. That's impossible. We can't do it. Instead, we say, It's never been done in the history of the world, but clearly this makes sense. OK, let’s roll up our sleeves and get it done.
How about you? What guides you personally in your work?
SBIA is a place where the best idea wins, but if that idea is yours, you have to own it. There's no passing the buck. If I make a suggestion or lobby for something, then I am responsible for the process as well as the result.
We have direct access to our senior leadership, and our senior leadership are fond of saying, Don’t just tell me the problem—tell me the solution! That resonates with me, and with my colleagues. I feel so energized by the notion that, despite our extraordinary assets under management, we are still nimble and flexible enough that a single person with a good idea, the courage of their convictions, and buy-in from their partners and colleagues can still make a real difference.
Is there anything that you're working on that has you particularly excited?
I’m really passionate about advancing the cause of gender diversity in our field. We have worked really hard to bring more women to SBIA and to increase female visibility in tech and finance more broadly. Historically it’s been an uphill battle, but uphill battles are our specialty at SBIA!
