What inspired your passion for this line of work?
The common thread woven through the different immigrant cultures in which I was raised was the belief that the world is filled with opportunities, and with hard work you can take advantage of them. As one of the first Apple Computer dealers on the East Coast, my parent’s small business provided me with the opportunity to witness not only the impact of technology on a broad basis (the PC revolution) but also its impact on a personal level, in how it affected my family’s livelihood. Technology provided us with opportunities that neither of my parents had experienced in their home countries. I think that planted the seed with me. I knew I wanted to work with those who also saw the world as a place of opportunity and had a strong work ethic and a belief that technology could change people’s lives for the better.
What gets you excited about your current work?
I'm most excited about helping promising companies get clarity around their own strategy and positioning. We are truly blessed to work with a lot of innovative companies that share a common passion about solving massive challenges and targeting enormous opportunities. During my nearly 20 years on Wall Street assessing investments across multiple technology markets, I was often led to one conclusion: The inability to be clear on one’s strategy and marshall the right resources to execute on that strategy is the missing link that can hold some otherwise successful businesses back. That's something we’re able to help with, and I love doing it.
Our goal across the organization is to empower these innovators to not only achieve their intended results but to surpass them.
You went from analysis to operations. Was that a pretty big leap?
It actually feels very natural. I spent nearly 20 years working with and discerning which companies were well-positioned to capitalize on big picture trends. I worked across a diversified set of end markets: telecommunications, media, hardware, semiconductors, software, services, and renewables—among others. Our founders are working tirelessly day and night, driving their businesses forward at what are often breakneck speeds. Our goal across the organization is to empower these innovators to not only achieve their intended results but to surpass them. In some cases the latter can require a different perspective—an ability to see the big picture across multiple arenas, which our founders might be simply too busy to see otherwise. My background as an analyst can provide that perspective.
What surprises you in your work?
One thing that surprises me—inspires me, really—is the way the companies in our ecosystem help each other. Before I joined, I didn’t fully appreciate how SoftBank created its unique “ecosystem of empowerment.” I've never seen this level of connectivity and enthusiasm across multiple organizations—all with the shared goal of creating long-term value and impact. As part of the Operating Group, we get to identify the relationships and connections that can help fast-growing companies further accelerate, and strengthen themselves while they're doing it.
What does success look like to you?
For me, success isn’t about avoiding setbacks or challenges, it’s accepting all of the fluctuations as a necessary part of the process to ensure progress.
My philosophy is that if you’re looking for opportunity, you’ll find it. The timing and form in which it shows up may not be exactly aligned with your perception, but it’s out there. That’s what I love about my work. It’s a chance to help some of the world’s most creative businesses find the opportunities that are all around them. I believe the world is an abundant place, and I think the businesses we work with are using technology to share that abundance and make the world better. If we help them succeed, we all win.
