There are companies emerging now that will define the future. We’re trying to identify those companies, the ones with the potential to transform their part of the market and help their leadership teams be even better at what they do.
What’s the most common question that people ask you when they hear you’re with the Vision Fund?
Most people focus on the size of the Vision Fund. But the question shouldn’t be about how much money we plan to invest. Instead, what they should ask is how we’re helping the founders we back accelerate the growth of their companies and the pace of innovation.
We believe that we’re at the start of an information revolution that will be as important as the industrial revolution. There are companies emerging now that will define the future. We’re trying to identify those companies, the ones with the potential to transform their part of the market and help their leadership teams be even better at what they do. We want to accelerate the whole process.
What makes a company and founder grab your attention?
It’s hard to define what we’re looking for, because it’s different every time. I think the one thing that ties them all together is that they’re each seeking to latch on to something big. Think of surfers who know how to find and ride the really big waves—they really have two skills. First, they’re good surfers, that’s essential. But they’re also really intuitive about what’s happening in their field. They see the really big next thing; they know exactly when and where to catch that big wave. That’s what the founders we work with have in common.
Do you have any examples of a company like that? Something that’s bigger than it looks?
DiDi is a great example—it’s providing mobility services to help people to go from A to B daily, in China and also in Latin America. At first it seems like it’s just solving that big problem, but then you realize DiDi is actually revolutionizing more than transportation: It is also helping to redesign cities through technology and improve the quality of life for urban populations—reducing pollution and traffic and improving safety. What do you hope to accomplish through your work with Vision Fund?
I work on the future of transportation, financial services, and robotics, and the sheer scale of our investments means that we are able to have a big impact.
I think if we do it right, we’ll be helping people to lead better lives—helping them do what they want to do, in a more efficient and affordable way. That gives them new opportunities. It opens up their world.
What inspires you?
My curiosity. I’m very curious about what’s happening in the world. I love to travel, and I’m lucky that my family loves that too, so we can be part of this world, and be curious together.
